Discover what Martial Arts are meant to be...
Re-Think Martial Arts. Experience the Difference.
Join the absolutely most FRIENDLY & INTELLIGENT Martial Arts Practice EVER :)
Dear Parents and Students,
The Grasshoppers Martial Arts practice is entirely non-traditional and focused on conflict management. In short, this means that I do not train kids into robots, but instead I help them use their natural abilities to think, strategize, adapt, learn, and create through Movement. We "dress" this up in practical and effective Martial Arts techniques, games, partner work, and full body training - progressively expanding physical, mental, and emotional resilience and skills. The "ultimate" goal is intelligent and self-directed empowerment - a combination between self-awareness, self-control, and self-improvement. What Students learn at the Grasshoppers Club becomes a part of their own long-lasting "internal toolset" of skills.

Madison Grasshoppers Martial Arts Club
Inviting curious minds because curiosity opens all possible doors into all kinds of adventures and journeys of discovery and learning.
The way we train brings about an accelerated learning experience. At the Grasshoppers Club, practice is purposely never the same, focused on each participant's skill and conditioning level, and aiming to HELP students find their own way and their own inner power.
We provide a safe learning environment where each student can explore and develop on their own personal rhythm. If Waldorf, Democratic Education, and Martial Arts were to combine into a single bubble of fun exploration through movement, then Grasshoppers classes would be it. We invite everyone to Re-THINK Martial Arts and discover how ancient ways can be adapted to our modern reality of needs and circumstances.
While we do not "fight", we spar a LOT. Our approach has 4 phases based on Skill level. Sparring is never full contact and never meant to harm. One could compare it to a pat on the back - friendly and progressively more intense.
"If it only works when it's set, it's a setup."
We explore movement with practicality in mind. Functional, natural movement is an intrinsic part of training, and so is improvisation. The intensity and complexity of our training depends entirely on each Student's time and effort invested in practice during daily life. As participants progress, so does our practice. There is no judgement - we do not compete or practice to show off.
ALL the games we play have a direct correspondent in martial arts applications. This is explained during each class, and this "play mode" is the foundation of how we build skills. Think of it as Lego, but with Movement.
At least once per month, we may train weapons. At the Grasshoppers Club Students are NEVER required to do something and this also applies to weapons training. If a Student does not feel ready to swing about, they do NOT have to; we can easily adapt everything to empty hand techniques. That, however, never happened. As soon as I bring out a sword, everyone wants to swing it.
Rest assured, we practice very safely and we begin with padded swords. Much later we incorporate wooden swords and sticks.
Eventually, each Student will need their own equipment. Here is an example of a 35" sword. Some kids might enjoy a model that is 27" (don't attempt to cut a 35" down to 27", it's a mess).
